stans cake 028So this weeks reading…I know you’re all dying to hear about it.  Or not, but you’re going to anyway.  It was a blast.  There’s something very fulfilling about reading in public.

The Hustler shop and café is a nice setting for a reading.  There are comfortable chairs and couches to lounge in.  The audience can enjoy a coffee, cake and biscotti while they listen.  Stan Kent starts spinning around 7:45 so there’s music for patrons before the reading.  The Hustler Hollywood staff are charming.

I presented Stan with his cake…the rather odd interpretation of a wedge shoe.  Stan has a shoe fetish and it was also his birthday week.  Gendy from the LA Weekly was there, so cool.  Marame, Zoe Nichols, Jay Lygon were there to support me as well as my good friend Mike and brought his friend Donny (one of those meetings where we both looked at each other and said, “ah, so you’re not just a figment of Mike’s imagination”).  Donny also apparently agrees with my nick-name of Sexy Guy for Sexy Guy.

After a brief intro about the reading series by Stan, Eden Bradley read from her upcoming ménage vampire novel with Samhain.  A bit of blood sports and guys getting it on.  From the part she read, it looks like a good story.

Then it was my turn.  I read from two portions of Personal Demons.  The scene (for those who’ve read the book) with the dead chicken and then Chase and Enrique’s second time together.  People seemed like the bits, I actually got some laughs – which was good ‘cause those were supposed to be the funny parts.  I kept a good pace and didn’t kill the microphone.

Then it was contest time.  I gave away a copy of Personal Demons to whoever was willing to read a bit of random erotica Stan selected.  BWHAHAHAHH…only one soul, a gentleman named Bradley was brave enough.  And he did very well.  Then Stan passed out Hustler goody bags to various people.  The criteria was shoes.  One guy got a bag for wearing shoes he’d had sex in.  Then the sexy shoes were judged and bags passed out.  I got one for knowing Caligae (roman sandals worn by soldiers) were how Caligula got his name (basically means “little sandals”).

Rounding off the night, Stan read an orgy scene from one of his novels.  Then we killed the cake and passed it around.  Very fun.  Next time I have a new release I’ll have to do it again.

  1. Ahhh. Marame! I know her too! One day I’ll have to come up from the OC for this. Especially now that my M/M dragons are in print. :) It looks like a fun time!

  2. Heh. I lived in LA for five years, and never knew Hustler had a store there!

Sounds like everybody had a great time. :)

  3. The Hustler was so much fun, as always-even better to see you there, James! Your reading was hot and funny and your usual smooth prose. And the cake was awesome!
In The Flesh happens every month at the Hustler store-hope to see everyone there again. :)

    • Ah, she of the much Hawtness appears in person and in prose.

Sorry I didn’t get a better pic of you. I’m going to have to ditch my little Samsung and dig out SG’s Sony…he stashes it though. I may have to have him drill some holes in his new White Birch paddle he’s making to compensate.

  4. This was one of the best readings I’ve ever been to b/c we got a little bit of everything from the authors. Eden’s piece was just freakin’ hot (lots of squirming), James’s 2 passages made me go home and re-read the parts he left out (what a tease!), and Stan’s book was just insane with a kinky nun, fetish shoes and lots of sex (I adored him from top to bottom!). Surprisingly, I really dug how the volunteer reader pronounced the word “cunt,” with his deep and growly voice. Bravos all around!

  5. Lex, you should totally read there! It’s very chill and lots of fun.
