Biography
Hola, I’m James Buchanan, a multipublished author of, primarily, gay romance & fiction. I write original, erotic Gay (m/m) fiction. My writing style is across the board, but I tend to stick to mystery/suspense based plots as those allows me to explore my personal cop fetish and create dynamic outside tension to balance the relationship issues I put my characters through. As far as my characters go, I like men; really nice, sexy, handsome, strong guys with a bit of the world behind them. I like to put them together and have them be all angsty and romantic and get it on quite frequently.
In 2010 I took Honorable mention in the National Leather Association-International’s Pauline Reage Novel Category for Hard Fall. My novella Twice the Cowboy won both the Preditors & Editors Best Romance Novella of 2006 and the Golden Rose 2007 award for Best Novella.
All of my work to date is erotic, I do not believe in “closing the door” on my characters. Sex is often where characters are the most raw and expressive…so why shy away from that. My fiction runs the gamut of mystery, thriller, horror, fantasy, historical fiction and science fiction and the works have heavy elements of romance in them. Much of my work, no matter what genre I’m writing in is often labeled “dark fic” or “Gothic” as it has an edgy, not quite happy feel. I don’t need happy endings.
Life wise, I grew up in a small Texas town, hours away from any other small Texas town and about as far west as you could go and still be considered in Texas. A stint at the University, where I ostensibly majored in English, garnered me a degree useful for being someone’s secretary. The absolute lack of employment opportunities sent me to Southern California. After a stint in County Mental Health (administration not client) I ran screaming into the field of Law. So far I have been practicing for many years and someday I might even get it right.
Currently I volunteer as the Obelisk Awards Coordinator, List Dom and Web/MySpace/Facebook Master for the Erotic Authors Association. I also edit the newsletter for the ManLoveRomance Author Co-op.
Now a word about identity, orientation and all that. I’ll give you a few links: the Wiki on Gender Bending, GenderQueer Revolution, TransGuys.com, and TransMen4Men. ![]()
SG, my partner, and I live a rather alternative lifestyle. We have a bolt in our ceiling for the swing. He’s a sub. I’m a Dom and a Top and harnesses are wonderful things. We’re both bi – living an outwardly heteronormative life. SG’s my beta reader for “the good parts” as he calls it. I’ve gender bended to some extent since college (very easy when you’re an anorexic, androgynous goth kid)…although SG teases that it can’t be drag when females can wear jeans and t-shirts anyway.
Why James? Originally I planned to write under my initials. The name James came about after a scary as shit real-life stalking incident reminded me that, at that time, I still worked in a very conservative environment. Since it was only a few months before my first book came out, I scrambled for a pen name that wasn’t as close to my own (which I’d started setting up with websites and such). James was who I came up with and maybe with more time and less panic, I’d have gone more genderless. But James is here now, and he’s as much a part of my personality as anything else, and if it bothers you…sorry
