I’m in with some great company.

I’ve always been.  Just ask people I went to HS with.

But, today I”m playing over there…come hang out with James’ in the backseat

James and Margaret ChoWent out last night with my bud Mike. He did an interview with her about her latest project “Cho Dependant,” a CD of comedic songs. On the back end of that he got invited to the premier/release party.

Mike, being a good friend drug me along. Jesse James was there as well as Kat Von D and a bunch of other folks in the industry.  Spent a good deal of time talking with some of Mike’s friends about conspiracy theories as to whether Micheal Jackson staged his own death an is living in Dubai somewhere.

Got to listen to Margaret perform Gimme Your Seed and then watch the videos for “Eat Shit and Die” and “I’m Sorry.”

And see ^ me with the celebrity. And this is why folks, James does not have many candid shots around.

The powerpoint presentation that accompanied my 2010 Popular Cultural Association presentation on the panel about the “Dark Side of Romance.”

Writing Power Dynamics

Arrived with two bags, leaving with one.

I always bring promo.  I always bring books.  It is one of those unwritten rules that if you are speaking, even if it’s just generally about a genre, and you write, people will come up and ask where they can get your books.  You can grab an immediate sale right then if you can say, “why, I have a bunch right here.”  The promo’s all gone, I have ten less books to haul home.

007Arrived on Wed night and hooked up with Sarah F. and gave her the paddle SG made for her and her subs.  Got dinner and promptly went to bed – and slept pretty much like crap, at least until I turned off the heater/air.  Someone has to come up with a quiet unit for that crap.

But, I did manage to get up and be actually functioning by 8am St. Louis time…which translates to 6am LA time.  The Romance Track panels for the Popular Culture Association yesterday were fun.  The first one up was a panel on Bollywood as romance.  Very entertaining.

010 Then it was on to my panel – The Dark Side of Romance: Rape, Serial Killers and Power Dynamics.  We were expecting 15-16 people.  We had 30.  Sometimes title is everything.  One paper discussed sexual force (read forced seduction) in romance. The next was about BDSM in heterosexual romance followed by “Serial Killers Make Great Boyfriends” tying the Dark Hero of paranormals into modern TV shows like Dexter (that one was pretty funny).  Then I discussed power dynamics and reality v. writing in gay romance.  It apparently went over well as I had half a dozen people come up after the panel to talk to me, more come up at lunch and then – when I was doing a little walking site-seeing tour – come up to me like on the street corner and start telling me how great my presentation was.  This is called, “feeding an author’s ego.”

0401101443-00 In my afternoon walking around St. Louis, I discovered that traffic laws here are apparently really suggestions. Only tourists wait at crosswalks and it doesn’t matter whether you have a red light or not, if no one is coming the other way pause and proceed.  The other thing I learned is that the arch is mind numbingly huge.  And you can go up to the top – which is not in this lifetime baby.  I do not do heights.

Dinner was at an Irish pub.  We took over a room with close to 35 people.  I met Jane of Dear Author fame.  It was a fun evening of trading stories, laughs and general camaraderie among like minded folks.

Time to go catch Jane’s panel on reviewing (I’m late but the first paper is on Jane Austin…and then more of a free forum with three panelists discussing reviewing.  After that, I hop on a plane and head home.

My friend Jeff Huntwell and I headed off to JT’s Stockroom last night to the Mr. LA Leather Reception.  It’s the 10th anniversary of Mr. LA Leather.  It’s nice to just hang out with likeminded folks and soak up the vibe.  JT’s put out a nice spread with free booze and various “items” on display: fucking machines, cages, full exam room set up.  And no, this wasn’t a play party so no demos.  Although, if anyone is interested JT’s will be hosting classes every 4th Thursday of the month on various Kink topics.

Of course you could give a crap about my thoughts…so on to the pictures (which are now fixed)

Hardfallfinal I’m completely honored and humbled that Deputy Joe made the finals in the Pauline Reage Novel category.  Here’s the press release with all the finalists.

I can’t say I wouldn’t be thrilled to win…but just making the finals is wonderful.  A mystery that takes on Mormonism, being outed in a small community and the main character discovering his sadistic/dominate streak.  It was a novel that took a lot of chances.

I.

AM.

BEAT.

But it was a good weekend.  I sold all my copies of both Hard Fall and Cheating Chance.  Almost sold out of Personal Demons, The Good Thief and Edge of Desperation and did well with the others. Zoe is the perfect pitch person, she was a one author whirlwind getting books into hands of various people and convincing them to buy.

  table3

Met lots and lots of wonderful people including the owner, art director and one of the authors from Dreamspinner Press, who’s name I am completely spacing right now because I’m so bushed.  But she’s delightful and from Texas.

Chatted with Smuttcutter and her gal about Porn and Tattoos.  Hung out with Jay Lygon and Zoe Nichols.  Both are great fun…although, apparently the Zoe is now adopted by a clique of slashers.

Now I just need to recover and start planning the next event.

I’m rather bushed…but it’s so much fun hanging out with folks where you can discuss the proper procedure for fitting your GI Joe with the dick eraser and then have people pass around pics of what they do with THEIR Joes and nobody thinks you’re odd.

Stephanie Vaughn is a stitch to be around, so the day flew.  It’s a small con, but fun, nice people.  And it’s always fun to talk about what fandoms people write in.  A good many people recognized our names from the LA Weekly article and several recognized me by my hat…author branding, it’s a good thing.  Of course I forgot to TAKE a copy of the LA Weekly article (my friend Jeffery grabbed my 1/2 a dozen since he lives in the more advent guard section of LA).

Swag doesn’t move as well at this con, not sure why.  “Have a deck of Ellora’s Cave cover cards.” “I don’t have any cash.” “No, have, as in ‘it’s free.’”  What doesn’t go I’ll keep for Antelope Valley Pride in June.

Tomorrow it’s Jay Lygon and I.
