Not a regular meeting of the So.Cal. branch of the Mystery Writers of America, but the summer BBQ. I took deviled eggs 3ways (shrimp cocktail, bacon/jalapeno, chipotle/cheese). Talked for a while with Haley Walsh (who writes medieval mysteries under another pen name) and a ton of other folks who’s names I just don’t remember.
Home brew and BBQ ribs/chicken/sausage/brisket food was awesome. It was fun hanging out with writers as always. There were a few differences in the type of conversations… no discussions of butt plugs and piercings. However, I traded courtroom stories with other attorneys/expert witnesses and we all knew the inside jokes. There were psychologists, navel officers and media consultants — all of whom write mysteries in some fashion. It was nice to be in that other vibe. You know, where you can talk about dismembering people don’t look at you like you’re crazy.
It was fun. I returned tired, but energized.
